Teaching Philosophy

Francesca Leo is a Metro Detroit-based flutist and private teacher. She has taught privately for over a decade and is a FlutePlay #littlefluteexpert. She currently teaches private flute and piano lessons at the Fortissimo Academy of Music and through her own private studio. Francesca’s former flute students have received the highest ratings on their solo performances in both the District and State levels of the Michigan State Band and Orchestra Association Solo and Ensemble competitions. Her students have also been accepted into the Michigan All-State Honors Band, held first chair positions in their school bands, and have excelled in every aspect of their flute playing.

Francesca has an extensive background of research in performing arts health and musculoskeletal performance-based injuries in music students, so she is extremely attentive to her students mental health and physical needs and incorporates her knowledge of Body Mapping, Alexander Technique, and physical warm-up routines in an effort to prevent performance-based injuries. She strives to foster a sense of community between her students, encouraging them to collaborate with and learn from each other. Francesca also believes that students should be passionate about the music they are learning, so she encourages her students to select at least one piece of music that they are motivated to learn each month.

As her students progress, she slowly integrates more standard flute repertoire and method books into their studies. She works to personalize each student's repertoire to showcase their strengths and continue to develop their fundamental basis to help them rapidly improve in both their technique and overall musicality.

Francesca has a passion for teaching and supports and encourages her students in every way she can. She also has experience teaching beginning guitar and piano.
